BOSTON – RIT and Holy Cross rebounded from Friday night losses to win Saturday and earn splits in their season opening series, two of five Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) men’s games played on Saturday. Elsewhere Army opened its regular season and Robert Morris put a scare into No. 6/6 Wisconsin, while Canisius tied Ferris State, 5-5.

West Point, N.Y. – Army West Point scored the game’s first two goals, with senior Brent Keefer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recording a goal and an assist, but Union responded with four unanswered tallies to take the season opener for both teams, 4-2.
Connor Smith scored twice for the visitors, tying the score on the power play in the second period and adding an insurance empty-netter in the third.
The Black Knights held a 36-29 shot advantage, including 14-5 in the first period. They face Royal Military College in an exhibition in their next game, October 11.

Buffalo, N.Y. – Ferris State scored five second-period goals but Canisius rallied with two in the third to post a 5-5 tie in the series finale Saturday night. The game goes down as a tie, but the Golden Griffins won the shootout, 2-1.
Five Golden Griffins scored goals, as Canisius put five on the scoreboard after a 4-0 win Friday. Jimmy Goffredo (Mount Laurel, N.J.),
L-P Fontaine (Chambly, Que.) and
Walter Zacher (Buffalo, N.Y.) gave the hosts a short-lived 3-1 lead. For Goffredo and Fontaine it was their second goals in as many days.
Hunter Price (Calgary, Alta.) and
FJ Buteau (Montreal, Que.) scored in the first 3:19 of the third period to tie the score at 5-5 and eventually set the stage for overtime and the shootout.

Game Highlights
Rochester, N.Y. – Sophomore William Moore (Westfield, Ind.) scored twice and RIT earned a split in the first AHA conference series of the season, defeating Niagara, 4-2, on Saturday in the Tigers’ home opener.
Both teams scored in the first three minutes of the game off the sticks of defensemen scoring for the first time with their teams. RIT sophomore Matthew Mania (Brandon, Fla.), a Michigan transfer, scored just 41 seconds into the game and Niagara’s
Theo Lemieux (Ste-Claire, Que.) responded shorthanded at 2:52.
From there the game settled down until the Tigers struck twice in the second period, the second a shorthanded tally of their own from Moore. Niagara freshman Adam Gionta (Clarence Center, N.Y.) scored his first to pull the Purple Eagles within one before Moore’s second secured the win.

Worcester, Mass. – Holy Cross built a 2-0 lead and although Maine tied the score late, the Crusaders converted in overtime to earn a weekend split, 3-2.
Junior Matthew Kursonis (Worcester, Mass.) scored for the second straight game and
Noah Eyre (Vienna, Va.) tallied his first of the season to make it 2-0. Maine’s goals – both at 4-on-4 – came with under four minutes to play in the third.
Connor Welsh (Greenwich, Conn.) scored the game-winner for Holy Cross while the goaltender was pulled due to a delayed penalty.
The Crusaders travel to Arizona State for a two-game series next weekend.

Madison, Wis. – Robert Morris went toe-to-toe with the sixth-ranked team in college hockey, but a second-period power-play goal provided the difference for Wisconsin Saturday night in a 1-0 win.
Sophomore goaltender Charlie Schenkel stopped 42 shots – his career high in a non-playoff game – for the Colonials. RMU pushed for an equalizer, including some strong chances in the third, but were denied by Badger goaltender Daniel Hauser.
RMU is off next weekend before a home-and-home series with Miami.
