Army, Holy Cross, Bentley, and Sacred Heart battle for spots in the title game

BOSTON, Mass. - March 13, 2025 - More exciting AHA postseason hockey is in store for this weekend as No. 5 Army visits No. 1 Holy Cross and No. 3 Bentley visits No. 2 Sacred Heart in the best-of-three semifinal round. The four teams are fighting for two spots in the AHA Championship Game, which is slated for Saturday, March 22. See below for a full preview of this weekend's semifinal action.

No. 5 Army (16-18-2, 14-10-2) at No. 1 Holy Cross (22-13-2, 19-5-2)

  • Junior forward Michael Abgrall was the hero for the Crusaders in the quarterfinal round, as his goal less than a minute into the overtime period in Game 3 sent Holy Cross to the semifinals. Liam McLinskey and William Elias assisted on the play.
  • Sophomore defenseman Brody Gagno scored the first goal of his collegiate career in Game 3. Gagno opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 10:58 of the 1st period.
  • Junior defenseman Mack Oliphant led Holy Cross with five points on a goal and four assists in the quarterfinals.
  • The Crusaders scored three power play goals on 11 chances (27.3%) vs. AIC in the quarterfinal round. McLinskey potted two of them.

  • Both of Army's quarterfinal wins against Niagara came in overtime fashion. Mac Gadowsky scored the game-winner in double overtime in Game 1, and Barron Woodring scored the OT game-winner in the winner-take-all Game 3.
  • Gadowsky and Ben Ivey paced the Black Knights in scoring last weekend, as they both scored three goals and dished out two assists for five points in the quarterfinals. For their efforts, Ivey was named AHA Forward of the Week and Gadowsky was named AHA Defenseman of the Week on March 10.
  • On the season, Gadowsky's 15 goals and 40 points are both tops in the nation among defensemen. His 40 points rank tied for 13th among all skaters in the country.
  • Freshman goaltender JJ Cataldo made 107 saves on 116 shots in the quarterfinals, which was good for a save percentage of .922.

  • First year goaltender Ajeet Gundarah stopped 113-of-118 shots (.958 save percentage) vs. Air Force in the quarterfinals. Gundarah was named AHA Rookie of the Week on March 10, and now sports a 1.85 goals-against average to go along with a .937 save percentage in 1462:15 between the pipes this season. 
  • Forward John Jaworski paced the Pios in scoring last weekend with four points on two goals and two assists. Jaworski had multi-point efforts in Game 1 and 3, which were both wins for SHU.
  • The Sacred Heart penalty kill went a perfect 9-for-9 in the quarterfinal round. The Pios also blocked 63 shots over three games vs. Air Force.
  • Forward Matthew Guerra led SHU with a +4 rating in the semifinals. Senior defenseman Hunter Sansbury leads the conference in blocks during the postseason with 15.

  • Junior goaltender Connor Hasley posted back-to-back shutouts in the quarterfinal round vs. Canisius. Hasley now has three shutouts in his last four games, and his 10 shuouts on the season lead all of college hockey and are two away from tying the single-season NCAA record (Greg Gardner, Niagara, 1999-2000).
  • Junior forward Jake Black scored two goals in Game 1 of the quarterfinal round last weekend.
  • Bentley leads the AHA with a face-off win percentage of 58.1 in the postseason. They also have the fewest penalty minutes (10) out of the four semifinal teams.
  • The Falcons out-shot the Golden Griffins 63-51 in the quarterfinal round. Bentley also held Canisius to an 0-for-3 mark on the power play.
