SYRACUSE 5, #4/4 PENN STATE 4 OT
Box Score | Game Highlights
Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior defenseman Jocelyn Fiala (Clavet, Sask.) scored her second goal of the game 1:36 into overtime to lift Syracuse to a 5-4 upset victory over Penn State. The win improves the Orange to 4-1-0 on the year (2-1-0 AHA) and marks their first win against a ranked opponent since a March 5, 2021 win against Penn State (0-48-1 against ranked teams since).

Syracuse built leads of 2-0 and 4-2 but the Nittany Lions answered each time. Jackson Kinsler (Madison, Wis.) and Jordan Blouin (Calgary, Alta.) had the first two tallies before Penn State scored twice in the second period.

Syracuse got the first two goals of the third with captain Nea Tervonen’s (Tampere, Finland) first of the year and Fiala’s first of her two. Fiala entered the game with two goals in 107 career games, both as a sophomore in non-conference games.

Penn State got one back on a power play of its own, then Nichole Hall (Stockholm, Sweden) tied it up at 4-4 with 2:54 left in the third period.

Sophomore goaltender Ava Drabyk (Saskatoon, Sask.) made 40 saves in the win, as Penn State held a 44-18 shot advantage.

By sending the game to overtime, Penn State extended its streak of conference games earning at least one standings point to 29 games (26 wins and 3 OTL, since Feb. 14, 2025). That is the second-longest such streak in conference history behind Mercyhurst’s 37-0-4 run from March 7, 2004 to Feb. 8, 2008.

Penn State was without forwards Grace Outwater (Picton, Ont.) and Abby Stonehouse (Blenheim, Ont.), who are attending Hockey Canada’s National Team Selection Camp ahead of the upcoming IIHF World Championship.

Secreto’s Laker debut came against her former team, as she had a 10-10-2 record for the Lions the last three seasons. She was tested most in the third period, turning away 12 shots and even adding an assist on the Lakers’ fourth goal.

Mercyhurst got a first-period power-play goal from Mariia Polozkova (Moscow, Russia) that stood up as the game-winner. Julia Perjus (Stockholm, Sweden), Avery Bryk (Whitby, Ont.) and Halle Duchene (Saskatoon, Sask.) added third-period goals.

Polozkova and Duchene, two freshmen, have combined to score five of the Lakers’ last nine goals.
